1927 – The Vision of Ernest Holmes

Ernest Holmes (1887–1960) founded Religious Science—also known as Science of Mind—a spiritual, philosophical, and metaphysical movement within New Thought. Holmes described Religious Science as a “correlation of laws of science, opinions of philosophy, and revelations of religion applied to human needs and the aspirations of man.”

Dr. Raymond Charles Barker

1946 – Dr. Raymond Charles Barker

Dr. Raymond Charles Barker, a distinguished student of Holmes, was appointed to establish the First Church of Religious Science in Manhattan. Barker led the church from 1946 to 1979 and also served as president of the International Association of Religious Science Churches.

Louise Hay

1970s – Louise Hay’s Journey

Louise Hay began her spiritual journey at the First Church under Dr. Barker’s leadership. She eventually authored the bestselling You Can Heal Your Life, which has sold more than 65 million copies worldwide.

Rev. Wade Adkisson

1980s – Rev. Wade Adkisson & AIDS Ministry

Leadership transitioned to Rev. Stuart Grayson and later Rev. Wade Adkisson. The church played a vital role in supporting the community during the AIDS crisis, offering spiritual healing, compassion, and outreach.

Rev. Dr. Greg Harte

2018 – Continuing the Legacy

Rev. Dr. Greg Harte became pastor of the First Center in 2018, carrying forward the teachings of love, healing, and spiritual empowerment established by Ernest Holmes, Dr. Barker, and others before him.
