NYC's Home for the New Thought Movement

Most spiritual trends disappear in a decade. Science of Mind has lasted nearly a century because it works. We teach you how to use universal principles, reprogram your subconscious, and create actual change. Not positive thinking. Not manifestation hype. Real New Thought practice, the way Ernest Holmes and Louise Hay learned it.

More Than History. A Living Community.

The First Center isn’t a museum of spiritual ideas and it’s a thriving community of seekers, students, and practitioners applying New Thought principles to modern life.

Meet Rev. Dr. Greg Harte

Classical Wisdom Meets Radical Healing

Since 2017,

Rev. Gregory Harte has been doing something rare in New York City, building a ministry that honors the intellectual depth of Ernest Holmes and Emerson while delivering the warmth and accessibility of Louise Hay.

It started decades ago when someone handed him Louise’s little blue book. That moment sparked a 30-year journey of integrating classical Science of Mind teachings with the affirming, emotionally resonant approach that Louise Hay pioneered.

THE LINEAGE YOU'RE JOINING

Nearly 100 Years of Transformation

This isn’t new. This is legacy.

The Foundation

Ernest Holmes founded Religious Science (Science of Mind)—a New Thought movement teaching that consciousness creates reality and universal principles govern how life works.

Coming to Manhattan

Dr. Raymond Charles Barker , Holmes’ distinguished student, established The First Church of Religious Science in New York City. For 33 years, Dr. Barker taught thousands how to use their minds as creative instruments.

A Student Who Changed the World

Louise Hay began studying under Dr. Barker. She learned affirmations, subconscious reprogramming, and New Thought healing practices. Years later, she wrote You Can Heal Your Life—now sold over 65 million copies worldwide.

The techniques in that book? She learned them here.

Love During Crisis

Under Rev. Stuart Grayson and Rev. Wade Adkisson, The First Center became a sanctuary during the AIDS epidemic—offering spiritual healing, community support, and compassionate care when many institutions turned away.

Continuing the Legacy

Rev. Dr. Greg Harte became the Spiritual Director, carrying forward the teachings of Holmes, Barker, and Hay. Today, he leads a diverse community committed to practical spirituality and New Thought principles.

Your Chapter Begins

The story continues with every person who walks through our doors seeking truth, healing, and community. What will your chapter be?

Understanding Religious Science in Three Parts

PART 1

It’s called a “science” because it’s based on patterns that repeat.
When you think the same thoughts over and over, you get the same results. When you shift those thoughts, really shift them at the subconscious level, the results shift too. This isn’t magic. It’s cause and effect. We’ve watched it happen for 97 years.

PART 2

It’s called “religious” because it deals with big questions.
How does life work? What’s my purpose? Why do I keep hitting the same walls? What’s the connection between my inner world and my outer circumstances? These are spiritual questions, even if you don’t consider yourself religious.

PART 3

It’s called “Science of Mind” because your mind is the tool.
Not your brain, your consciousness. The part of you that observes, decides, and creates. We teach you how to work with your subconscious, not just your conscious thinking. That’s where real change happens.

Watch your thoughts for a week, not to judge but to see which ones you’re repeating on autopilot.

What We Stand For

There’s an intelligence behind everything. It flows through you, not around you.
You’re not small or broken. You have the ability to work with universal principles to create change.
It’s not something you achieve someday. It’s a shift in consciousness you can access now.
Thoughts impress on the creative force of life. Understanding this is how you transform.
Consciousness affects your emotions, your mind, your body. Louise Hay proved it. You can too.
Practice it. See what happens. That’s how you know if it’s true.
Not separate beings fighting for scraps. One life, expressing through all of us.
Even when it’s hard. The universe is characterized by goodness, not punishment.

A Living Tradition for Modern Life

Rev. Harte carries forward the teachings of Ernest Holmes, Dr. Raymond Charles Barker, and Louise Hay, not as museum pieces, but as living tools for transformation. His vision for this community is simple but powerful:

Love Points the Way. Law Makes It Possible.

Love shows us where to go. Universal principles give us the means to get there.
Whether you’ve been on a spiritual path for decades or you’re just beginning to ask deeper questions, Rev. Harte invites you to join us, not as a member required to believe certain things, but as a fellow traveler on the path of spiritual discovery.
You belong here, exactly as you are.
